Prokletije National Park, or as some like to call it, ‘Alps of Montenegro’ is the fifth, and at the same time the youngest national park in Montenegro, founded in 2009. The park is named after the eponymous mountain that makes up most of the national park. The very name ‘Prokletije’ is very interesting because it means something haunted / damned, and it probably symbolizes inaccessibility and steep peaks that pose a great challenge to hikers. In addition to the mountain, the park includes two nature parks: Volušica and Lake Hrid. The northern part of the park borders the Gusinjsko-Plavska valley, and the southern part is a real treat for visitors – especially the mountain peaks, the highest of which is Zla Kolata (2534 m). Once you climb one of them Tromeđu ( triple border) , you will see the signs that separate Montenegro from Albania and Kosovo at the same time you will be in three countries!

The ticket price for the Prokletije National Park is € 1. Here you can see the price list of the national park (prices for renting walking sticks, shoes, bicycles, etc.)

What to do in Prokletije National Park?

Basically, the main activity in this park is hiking, and visitors mostly climb Volušica and Popadija, two peaks that will leave you breathless from where there is a beautiful view of the entire park. More than 50 peaks reach a height of over 2000 meters, and even 20 of them are more than 2500 meters. It is not easy to climb each of them, so sometimes professional alpinists and mountaineers come to Prokletije to practice before embarking on a trek to conquer the world’s highest peaks.

But the mountain is not the only treasure of this park. Lake Hridsko is also very popular among visitors. It is located at an altitude of 1970 meters, and the locals also call it the ‘lake of happiness’. According to local legend, the lake was created by the gods so that fairies could bathe there without being seen by humans. It is also believed that swimming in the lake will bring happiness in marriage and health, while throwing jewelry into the lake will fulfill any of your wishes – so it is up to you to find out which of these legends is true.
